The recent high-profile resignations of Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Arvind Subramanian from their professorial positions at Ashoka University threw up conversations about academic freedom in the country yet again. Over the last few years, this topic and the role of the state in pressuring academics and academic institutions has become a hot-button issue.

But before we get into any larger questions, it is essential to understand how one can study academic freedom as a quantitative measure; so, how does one measure academic freedom? What is the Academic Freedom Index? To help us understand these, Sourya Reddy speaks to Robert Quinn, the Executive Director of Scholars at Risk.
