In states across the country, especially Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, access to common lands or commons, is essential for local communities. These lands are central to the communities’ livelihoods, their security and their dignity.

But commons have been subject to encroachments time and again, by a variety of stakeholders—communities, governments, businesses and more. And resolving these conflicts is never easy, as witnessed by a mounting number of cases in Rajasthan.

To address these conflicts and speed up the resolution process, the Rajasthan High Court ordered the formation of Public Land Protection Cells (PLPCs). So how can these PLPCs actually make a difference to communities that rely on commons? We explore with Pooja Chandran from the Foundation for Ecological Security, and Puspa Sen from Jan Chetna Sansthan, to find out more.
