Out Of Breath: The Ghazipur Landfill (Part I)

Filmed by Nabina Chakraborty and Sumit Krishna Yadav.

The Ghazipur landfill has been operating as a garbage dumping ground since 1984. Standing at a height of 65 m, Delhi’s biggest landfill is almost as tall as the Taj Mahal. The stench emerging from the 140 lakh metric tonne of waste is almost unbearable for the residents living nearby. The environment is hazardous. In 2017, two lives were lost as part of the landfill had collapsed; yet, it still exists and grows bigger by the day. On average, between 2500 and 3000 metric tonnes of garbage is dumped and left to rot here daily. In the first part of this short documentary, we explore how these issues are affecting the local communities and if they have the agency to solve the problem.
