In January 2022, The Wire’s series of articles on the mysterious Tek Fog app sparked a number of discussions on how technology can be used or misused to shape narratives in the public sphere. Simultaneously, it also sparked a parallel discussion on reportage on technology and its impacts on Indian society — how can newsrooms distil complex facts into a narrative that makes sense to the ordinary reader, who may not be familiar with the intricacies of an algorithm?
In the 5th episode of The Impact, The Bastion and Esya Centre explore what is at stake with tech journalism in India, and ways that journalists can improve their reportage. Megha Bahree, Fellow at The Esya Centre, talked with experienced journalists Nitin Sethi and Peter Guest, along with security analyst Ayushman Kaul, who co-authored the controversial Tek Fog series, to understand the levers of reporting on technology, and what kinds of questions a good story can hope to ask and answer.
