Technology is complex to unpack—especially in In Technology is complex to unpack—especially in India’s evolving electoral system. While awareness around nascent blockchain and app-based voting exist, a genuine public understanding of how these online voting systems work is scarce. Before implementing online voting systems, voters, researchers, and journalists reporting on elections need a framework to assess the feasibility of these processes. Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay, Curator of One Vote Project (@has.geek ) explores what such a structure might look like in our latest. Link to the full piece in bio!
Editor’s note: The One Vote Project will host its first Annual Conference on 25 January, 2022, to examine the effects of technological interventions in electoral processes on the democratic rights and freedoms of citizens. A collaboration between Article 21 Trust and One Vote, the conference will cover topics including voter data privacy and impact of Voter ID-Aadhaar linking, disenfranchisement of electors in Telangana, electoral bonds, political advertising, Pegasus, surveillance, and risks for electoral democracy, among others. On 7 January 2022, the Action Plan for the Cheetah On 7 January 2022, the Action Plan for the Cheetah Reintroduction Project was released. Its objective: to bring back the mammal to India 70 years after the last one was spotted in the subcontinent. To make space for the cheetahs, the ‘voluntary’ relocation of families is ongoing in at least three villages in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno-Palpur National Park, the site of the big cat’s return. Yet, a history of relocation for conservation outcomes and the non-implementation of the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (FRA), weighs heavily on this region, leaving Adivasi communities with few options other than to relocate from their homes.

On January 14th 2022, residents of Dhinkia village On January 14th 2022, residents of Dhinkia village in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha were protesting against a proposed steel manufacturing plant by JSW, when the protests turned violent, with police personnel injuring as many as 40 protestors
Two weeks ago, the residents had put up barricades, not allowing govt officials and police on their cultivation which were to be acquired for the steel plant. Back in 2019, @arpitha_kodiveri wrote with us, explaining the background of this project, just weeks after the project was transferred from Posco to JSW.

Crores have been spent by various state government Crores have been spent by various state governments on different policies to ‘develop’ the Yamuna and bring it back to life. In the process, such schemes disenfranchise those communities that have lived by the river for generations. As ‘encroachers’ are evicted to ‘beautify’ the riverbank under different initiatives, ultimately, the Yamuna remains as polluted as ever.
